Where To Get The Best Lobster On Mount Desert Island

[2026 Guide]

Where to Get the Best Lobster Rolls on Mount Desert Island blog post graphic featuring a close-up of a loaded Maine lobster roll with pickles, tomato, and chips on red checkered deli paper

If you’re heading to Acadia National Park, you’re heading to lobster heaven. Mount Desert Island is home to Acadia, Bar Harbor, and some of the most stunning coastline in New England; it’s also home to some of the best lobster you’ll ever eat. We’re talking fresh-off-the-boat, still-tastes-like-the-ocean, life-changing lobster.

I spent an entire summer living near Bar Harbor (Brian was working as a kayak guide on the island), and let’s just say I took my lobster research VERY seriously. We hit every lobster pound, shack, and food truck we could find. Some were forgettable. Some were so good we went back multiple times.

This guide covers the best spots to get lobster on Mount Desert Island, from classic lobster rolls to full lobster dinners, plus a few unexpected twists that blew my mind. Whether you’re in Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, or the quiet side of the island in Northeast Harbor, I’ve got you covered.

Let’s eat! 🦞

Important: MDI Lobster Spots Are Seasonal!

Before you plan your trip, know this: almost every lobster shack on Mount Desert Island is seasonal, typically operating from late May through mid-October. A few spots in downtown Bar Harbor stay open longer, but the classic lobster pounds close up when the crowds leave.

Always check hours and confirm a spot is available before making the drive, especially during the shoulder season (May, early June, late September, October).

The Best Lobster On Mount Desert Island

1. Bar Harbor Lobster Pound – ME 3

  • Address: 414 ME-3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  • Season: Late May through mid-October
  • Price: Market value
  • My Rating: House Roll = 10/10 🏆
Bar Harbor Lobster Pound's signature house roll overflowing with fresh whole Maine lobster meat in a toasted split-top bun, served in branded lobster pound paper with French fries

Bar Harbor Lobster Pound doesn’t mess around. Their house lobster roll is classic Maine style done to absolute perfection. Tender, sweet claw and tail meat, lightly dressed, on a perfectly grilled and buttered roll. No frills, no gimmicks, just an exceptionally executed classic. The lobster here is so fresh and so perfectly prepared that it reminds you why this simple sandwich became iconic in the first place.

Don’t miss: The lobster tacos! We gave them a solid 8/10, a fun twist if you want something different, but still all about the lobster.

Three lobster tacos from Bar Harbor Lobster Pound served in a compostable takeout container on a red table, loaded with mango salsa, purple cabbage, and chipotle aioli with a lime wedge on the side

You can also get a full lobster dinner here, including steamed clams, mussels, corn, the works. But honestly, the lobster roll is why you came, and it won’t disappoint.

The View: Situated just off ME-3, you’ll recognize Bar Harbor Lobster Pound thanks to the Ice Cream Boat. This is probably the cutest spot on the list, complete with picnic tables, heaters, string lights, and cornhole. They’ve created a “hangout” space that makes you want to stay there all night.

🐾 Dog-Friendly: Yes! The outdoor picnic area is dog-friendly, so the well-behaved pups can join you.

2. The Bucking Lobster – Northeast Harbor

The Bucking Lobster food truck in Mount Desert Maine - charming white and red roadside seafood shack decorated with lobster buoys and a retro cartoon lobster logo, one of the hidden gem lobster roll spots on Mount Desert Island and a locals-favorite alternative to the busier Bar Harbor seafood restaurants near Acadia National Park
  • Address: Food Truck in Northeast Harbor, ME
  • Season: Late May through early October (food truck, so check Facebook for current location!)
  • Price: Market value (around $28-32)
  • Find them on Facebook
  • My Rating: Bánh Mì Roll = 10/10 | Hot Buttered Roll = 10/10 🏆

Okay, hear me out: Bánh Mì Lobster Roll. The Bucking Lobster is a food truck usually parked in Northeast Harbor, and their Bánh Mì Lobster Roll is one of the most creative and delicious lobster rolls I’ve ever had. Fresh Maine lobster meets Vietnamese-inspired flavors with pickled vegetables, fresh herbs, a little heat, all tucked into a perfectly crusty roll. It sounds crazy. It works beautifully.

Bahn mi lobster roll at The Bucking Lobster in Mount Desert Maine - creative Vietnamese-inspired lobster roll loaded with fresh Maine lobster, pickled cucumbers, and carrots on a toasted bun with waffle chips, one of the most unique and creative lobster roll variations on Mount Desert Island and a standout reason to seek out this hidden gem seafood trailer near Acadia National Park and Bar Harbor Maine

But here’s the thing: their hot-buttered lobster roll is equally incredible. Brian ordered it, and we both agreed it was a 10. Warm, buttery, perfectly tender lobster on a grilled roll. If you’re more of a traditionalist, go for this one. You won’t be disappointed.

Honestly, you can’t go wrong here. This is one of those spots where everything on the menu delivers.

The Vibe: It’s a food truck, so you’re not getting oceanfront dining. But Northeast Harbor itself is charming, there are benches nearby, and you can wander down to the harbor to eat with a water view. Plus, you’re on the quiet side of MDI, away from the Bar Harbor crowds, which is part of the appeal.

Pro tip: Since it’s a food truck, the location can occasionally vary. Check their Facebook page for the current parking spot before making the trek!

3. Rose Eden Lobster – ME-3

  • Address: 864 ME-3, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  • Season: May through October
  • Find them on Facebook
  • Our Rating: 9.5/10

Rose Eden Lobster is a hidden gem that locals love, and now you’re in on the secret. They serve up excellent classic lobster rolls, but the real star here is their Cajun Lobster Roll. Yes, you read that right. Cajun. Lobster. Roll. Fresh Maine lobster with a spicy Cajun seasoning that gives it a kick without overpowering that sweet lobster flavor. It’s unexpected, it’s delicious, and it’s something completely different from the traditional Maine style.

Don’t miss: The Corn and Crab Chowder. Oh my god. It was AMAZING. Creamy, sweet, loaded with crab, the perfect starter or side to your lobster roll. Get it. Trust me.

If you’re feeling adventurous but still want that classic lobster roll experience, Rose Eden is your spot. They also do a fantastic traditional roll if you’re a purist traveling with someone more daring (or vice versa).

The View: Rose Eden sits right off of ME-3. Grab a picnic table and enjoy your Cajun roll. It’s casual, it’s relaxed, and it feels like a well-kept secret, which it kind of is.

4. Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound – Southwest Harbor

Lobster rolls served in black and white checkered paper baskets with fresh lettuce at Charlotte's Legendary Lobster Pound in Maine, with the red and white seafood shack visible in the sunny background
  • Address: 566 Seawall Rd, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679
  • Season: Memorial Day through mid-October
  • Price: Footlong – $42.95 | ¼ lb Roll – $23.95
  • Full menu here
  • Our Rating: 9/10

Charlotte’s has been on my “Best Lobster Rolls in Maine” list for years, and there’s a reason it keeps earning its spot.

On my second visit to Charlotte’s, I was told that lobsters actually feel pain when stressed before they die, which makes the meat chewy. Charlotte’s has figured out how to humanely process their lobsters, and you can tell a HUGE difference. This roll has incredibly tender meat compared to many others I’ve tried; it’s honestly remarkable.

You can get these rolls two ways: with mayo or butter. Here, I highly suggest you try it with butter! You can also get the jumbo with half and half (half mayo and half butter – I highly recommend).

Don’t miss: The blueberry ice cream for dessert. You’re welcome.

The Vibe: Charlotte’s is on the quiet side of the island in Southwest Harbor, and there’s way less traffic here than in Bar Harbor. There’s also a ton of whitetail deer (be careful when driving over here). There are picnic tables outside where your furry friends can join you.

🐾 Dog-Friendly: Yes! Outdoor seating is dog-friendly.

5. The Travelin Lobster – Southwest Harbor

  • Address: 1569 ME-102, Southwest Harbor, ME 04679
  • Season: Seasonal (typically May through October)
  • Our Rating: Brian = 7/10 | Vanessa = 8/10

The Travelin Lobster is a solid choice on the quiet side of MDI. It’s a no-frills roadside spot that does classic lobster rolls well.

I got the Sampler because I wanted to try all of their different lobster roll options. I preferred the warm butter roll here; it just hits different when the lobster is warm and buttery. Brian liked the classic with garlic aioli, which adds a nice little twist without going too crazy. Both are good options depending on your mood.

It’s not going to blow your mind the way Bar Harbor Lobster Pound or The Bucking Lobster did, but it’s a very good, tasty stop if you’re exploring the Southwest Harbor side of the island and want lobster without driving back to Bar Harbor.

The Vibe: Casual, roadside, grab-and-go. Nothing fancy, but that’s part of the charm.

6. Stewman’s Lobster Pound – Bar Harbor

  • Address: 35 West Street, Bar Harbor, ME 04609
  • Season: Seasonal (typically May through October)
  • Our Rating: 6.5/10
The iconic lobster buoy-covered exterior wall of Stewman's Lobster Pound in Bar Harbor Maine, with dozens of colorful vintage buoys hanging on a deep red building alongside weathered dock pilings wrapped in rope

Stewman’s is right in downtown Bar Harbor with a great waterfront location. It’s touristy, it’s convenient, and it’s… fine.

Look, I’ll be honest, we didn’t love the lobster roll here as much as the other spots on this list. It wasn’t bad by any means, but when you’ve had the 10/10 experiences at Bar Harbor Lobster Pound and The Bucking Lobster, a 6.5 feels like a letdown. The location is the main draw; you’re right on the water, right in town, and it’s easy to stumble into.

If you’re in downtown Bar Harbor and don’t want to venture out, Stewman’s will satisfy your lobster craving. But if you have time to drive a few minutes, there are better options on this list.

The View: The waterfront location is genuinely nice. Sit outside if you can; the views help. The dock next door to the restaurant is where Brian worked last summer.

More Lobster Spots On Mount Desert Island

A lone working fishing boat silhouetted on the glassy water of Seal Harbor at sunset on Mount Desert Island Maine, with a pastel pink and lavender sky reflected in the exposed tidal flats at low tide

I couldn’t personally hit every single lobster spot on the island (though believe me, I tried). Here are some other popular spots that consistently rank well on TripAdvisor and Yelp. I’ll update this guide as I make my way through more of them!

Southwest Harbor & Bass Harbor

Beal’s Lobster Pier – 182 Clark Point Rd, Southwest Harbor. A longtime favorite on the quiet side of the island. Classic lobster pound right on the pier with outdoor picnic tables and water views. Known for fresh-off-the-boat lobster dinners and a no-frills, authentic Maine experience.

Thurston’s Lobster Pound – 9 Thurston Rd, Bernard Located in the tiny village of Bernard (even quieter than Southwest Harbor), Thurston’s is a working lobster wharf where you can watch the boats come in while you eat. Great for full lobster dinners. Cash or check only, no cards!

Abel’s Lobster – 13 Abel’s Lane, Mount Desert. A bit more upscale than the typical lobster pound, Abel’s has a beautiful location on Somes Sound (the only fjord on the East Coast!). Great for a special occasion lobster dinner with incredible views.

Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse viewed from the water on a boat tour in Acadia National Park Maine, perched above dramatic pink granite cliffs and dense spruce forest with visitors visible on the rocks below

Bar Harbor & Hulls Cove

Galyn’s – 17 Main St, Bar Harbor More of a sit-down restaurant than a lobster shack, Galyn’s is a Bar Harbor institution. Good for lobster when you want a full-service dining experience rather than picnic tables.

Geddy’s – 19 Main St, Bar Harbor. Another downtown Bar Harbor mainstay. Known more for the lively atmosphere and drinks than the lobster specifically, but they do serve lobster rolls and dinners.

Side Street Cafe – 49 Rodick St, Bar Harbor. A local favorite for comfort food. Not a lobster pound per se, but their lobster dishes are solid, and it’s less touristy than the main drag.

C-Ray Lobster – 25 Cottage St, Bar Harbor. Small, casual spot in downtown Bar Harbor. A good option if you want a lobster roll without leaving downtown.

Happy Clam Shack – 112 Cottage St, Bar Harbor. Casual spot with lobster rolls and fried seafood. Nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

Dorr Lobster Seafood Market – 20 Old Bar Harbor Rd, Bar Harbor. More of a market than a restaurant, but you can get fresh lobster and lobster rolls to go. Great option if you’re staying in a rental and want to cook your own!

A peaceful Mount Desert Island harbor in peak fall foliage season, with sailboats and lobster boats moored in turquoise blue water in front of classic Maine waterfront buildings and forested hillsides

Northeast Harbor & Seal Harbor

Archie’s Lobster – 1 Summit Rd, Mount Desert (near Northeast Harbor) Food truck vibes with solid lobster rolls. Good option on the quieter side of the island.

Frenchman’s Bay Lobster Rolls – Food truck, location varies. A food truck that shows up around the island. Check their social media for their current location. Gets good Yelp reviews.

The Stadium – Bar Harbor

The Stadium – 10 Kennebec Pl, Bar Harbor – a sports bar with lobster on the menu. More of a “grab a beer and watch the game” spot that happens to serve lobster than a dedicated lobster destination.

My take: If you only have time for one or two lobster stops on MDI, stick with my top picks above, Bar Harbor Lobster Pound, The Bucking Lobster, Rose Eden, or Charlotte’s. But if you’re spending a week on the island and want to do your own lobster crawl? This list should keep you busy!

Beyond Lobster Rolls: Full Lobster Dinners on MDI

stacked lobster traps at peggy s cove

Sometimes you don’t want a roll,  you want a whole lobster with all the fixings. Here’s where to get it:

Bar Harbor Lobster Pound – Full lobster dinners with steamed clams, mussels, corn on the cob, and all the drawn butter you could want. Waterfront picnic tables. This is the classic Maine lobster dinner experience.

Charlotte’s Legendary Lobster Pound – Full lobster dinners in a more relaxed, quiet setting. Great for families.

Rose Eden Lobster – Full lobster dinners with those stunning Frenchman Bay views.

Tips For Getting Lobster on Mount Desert Island

Go at off-peak times. The most popular spots (especially in Bar Harbor) get PACKED during peak lunch and dinner hours in summer. Try an early lunch (11 AM) or late lunch (2-3 PM) to avoid the worst crowds.

Bring cash. Some smaller spots and food trucks are cash-only or have iffy card readers. Bring some just in case.

Check before you go. Most MDI lobster spots are seasonal (late May through mid-October). Call ahead or check Facebook/websites to confirm hours, especially in shoulder season.

Venture beyond Bar Harbor. The quieter side of the island (Southwest Harbor, Northeast Harbor) has some of the best lobster with way fewer crowds. It’s worth the 15-20 minute drive.

Embrace the mess. You’re eating lobster. It’s going to be messy. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting butter on and lean into it.
