The Complete Acadia National Park Guide
Most Acadia guides tell you to “catch the sunrise at Cadillac Mountain” and “don’t miss the popovers at Jordan Pond House.”
Which is correct. But it’s not enough. It doesn’t tell you what to do at 9:58 AM two days before your visit to score that Cadillac sunrise reservation when everything shows as sold out. Or where to go for an epic sunrise even if you can’t see it on Cadillac Mountain. It doesn’t tell you that Gorham Mountain is my actual favorite hike on the island, less famous than the Beehive, almost as good a view, way less stressful. It doesn’t tell you that on Day 3, you have to choose between Schoodic Peninsula and the Quiet Side, and that choice matters, and here’s how to make it.
That’s what this guide is for.

What’s Inside:
✔ 2026 Logistics You Actually Need – entrance fees (including the new non-resident surcharge), Cadillac Mountain vehicle reservation system explained, Park Loop Road status, Island Explorer schedule, and the new Acadia Gateway Center in Trenton
✔ Getting There & Getting Around – airports, driving routes, the free Island Explorer bus, and parking strategy for every major stop
✔ When To Visit – a lived-there honest breakdown. The shoulder season sweet spots. The weeks to avoid. Why mid-October foliage now peaks around the 14th–18th (and the science behind why that date has shifted two weeks later since the 1950s)
✔ Acadia Orientation – how the park is laid out, what’s on which side of the island, and how to think about your days
✔ Best Hikes – organized by difficulty, with honest notes on what each is actually like (iron rungs, exposure, dog restrictions, and which one I’d do again tomorrow)
✔ Carriage Roads – the 45 miles of Rockefeller-built car-free roads, the best loops, where to rent bikes, and the 17 historic stone bridges worth finding
✔ Sunrise Spots – Cadillac, yes. But also Ocean Path at 5 AM (no reservation, almost nobody there), Schoodic Point facing east, and Compass Harbor (criminally underrated)
✔ Sunset Spots – The lesser-known ones that I absolutely love or the incredibly popular Bass Harbor Head Lighthouse (the east-side rocks, not the paved overlook), Ravens Nest on Schoodic, Hunters Beach, and the Cadillac summit
✔ Acadia With Your Dog – overview of dog rules, dog-legal trails, and seasonal beach bans (full dog guide sold separately)
✔ Where To Stay – campgrounds, hotels, B&Bs, and RV parks for every budget and vibe
✔ Schoodic Peninsula – why only 8% of visitors go, why that’s a mistake, and how to spend a full day on the mainland section of the park
✔ The Quiet Side – Southwest Harbor, Somesville, and the western half of MDI that most visitors drive past
The Itineraries: this is the heart of the guide:
Because “visit Cadillac and Jordan Pond” isn’t an itinerary. This is an itinerary:
→ 1 Day The best of Acadia! How to see the highlights in one day. Minute-by-minute, with exactly where to eat and park.
→ 2 Days (Hour-by-Hour) – Day 1: 4:30 AM wake-up, Cadillac sunrise, Acadia Perk coffee, 2 Cats breakfast, Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Cliffs, Jordan Pond, MDI Ice Cream, Stewman’s dinner, Shore Path. Day 2: Beehive hike, the Quiet Side, Wonderland, Charlotte’s foot-long lobster roll (my favorite lobster roll in Maine, full stop), Bass Harbor, Thurston’s, Cadillac sunset.
→ 3 Days – The Sweet Spot ⭐ — Day 1 as above. Day 2: your hike by fitness level (Strenuous/Moderate/Easy options), Eagle Lake carriage road loop, sunset paddle with Coastal Kayaking. Day 3: your choice — full Schoodic Peninsula day (Frazer Point → Schoodic Point → Schoodic Head → Ravens Nest) OR full Quiet Side day (Common Good Cafe → Acadia Mountain → Charlotte’s → Ship Harbor + Wonderland → Beal’s → Bass Harbor sunset). Both options mapped out in full.
→ 4 Days – Everything above plus Ocean Path sunrise (no reservation), Jeannie’s breakfast, whale watching or Diver Ed, Shore Path, downtown Bar Harbor, Reading Room dinner.
→ 5 Days — Slow Travel Mode – Three Day 5 options: boat to the Cranberry Isles (Beal & Bunker mailboat, ~$30 RT), Long Pond paddle, or Penobscot + Sargent hike (the second-tallest peak on the island, way less crowded than Cadillac).
Hi, I’m Vanessa. My husband Brian and I spent six months living beside Acadia in 2025, him guiding sea kayak tours on Frenchman Bay for Coastal Kayaking Tours, me hiking hundreds of miles on the trails with our dogs Loki, Freya, and Caly, and watching more sunrises than I can count. I’ve visited Acadia across multiple seasons over 10+ trips. The itineraries in this guide aren’t hypothetical. They’re what I would actually run for a friend.
