Salem In October: The Cheat Sheet
Most October advice for Salem tells you to book early and wear comfortable shoes.
Here’s what that advice doesn’t tell you. It doesn’t tell you that “book early” for the Salem Witch Museum means 10 PM the night before, online only, with no tickets at the door. It doesn’t tell you the House of the Seven Gables sold October in two batches, the first half on September 4 and the second half on September 19, so if you’re reading this now, you’re working with what’s left. It doesn’t tell you the free satellite lots have street addresses and a shuttle, or that the ferry is a daytime move because the last boat back to Boston leaves in the afternoon.
And it definitely doesn’t tell you what Halloween night looks like when it falls on a Saturday. Downtown closes to cars by noon. The MBTA garage locks from 6 PM to 11:30 PM, with no way in or out. The drone show goes up at 10:10 PM. The last train to Boston leaves at 11:05 PM, and 96,600 people were downtown on Halloween Day 2025, on a Friday.
That’s what this cheat sheet is for.
I lived in Massachusetts for seven years, less than an hour from Salem, and I went every October. I’ve done Halloween weekend as the giddy tourist and as the local who knew exactly which side street gets you back to the station. The difference between a great October day in Salem and a miserable one is almost never the attractions. It’s four or five logistics decisions made before you leave the house.
This is the October version of everything I know about this town, cut down to the part that fits on your phone.

What’s Inside
✔ The October Calendar, Honestly – October 1 through November 1, week by week, each window rated Sweet spot, Peak, or Wall. Plus a fall weather table and a packing note written for brick, cobblestone, harbor wind, and a 10 PM finish.
✔ What To Book, And Exactly When – every ticketed attraction with its adult price and exact release timing. The Witch Museum drops tickets at 10 PM the night before. The Gables released October 16–31 on September 19. Plus the lodging and dinner reality for a Saturday Halloween. Pick one ticketed anchor per day.
✔ Getting In, Getting Out, Halloween Night – the train, the ferry, and the satellite parking lots with addresses. Then the full Halloween-night timeline: downtown closes by noon, the garage locks from 6 to 11:30 PM, the drone show is at 10:10 PM, and the last train leaves at 11:05 PM, with the street closures and rules in between. Take the train. That’s the whole answer.
✔ One Perfect Weekday, Hour By Hour – 8:30 AM to the 11:05 PM train, with a backup for every stop in case the line is out the door. Plus the Skip This / Do This Instead lists, because everything free on this list is better than everything paid.
✔ The Hocus Pocus Filming Locations – the six real locations, their addresses, and what you can and can’t do at each. Some you can walk into. Some are someone’s front porch.
The Two Pages That Save Your Trip
Every page in here is useful. Two of them are the reason the cheat sheet exists.
The booking page turns “book early” into a list of times. Each ticketed attraction, its adult price, and the exact moment tickets drop, on one screen. Read it next to the October calendar and you’ll see why the Wall weekend is a Wall: the ticketed places sell out, the restaurants stop taking walk-ins, and everyone who didn’t set a 10 PM alarm is standing on Essex Street with nothing to do but shop. This page is the alarm.
The Halloween-night timeline is the other one. October 31 is a Saturday in Salem’s 400th year, and the city runs that night on a schedule nobody hands you at the train station. Road closures by noon. The garage locked at 6. Crowd rules, drinking rules, and the prop-weapon checkpoints. The drone show at 10:10. The last train at 11:05. Screenshot it, keep it on your phone, and get out of the line.
Hi, I’m Vanessa. I lived in Massachusetts for seven years, less than an hour from Salem, long before my husband Brian and I moved full-time into our travel trailer, Betty, with our three dogs, Loki, Freya, and Caly. Salem in October is still one of my favorite places in the country, and this cheat sheet is the version I’d text a friend the night before they go.
