Description

The Ultimate Salem, Massachusetts Guide
Most Salem guides tell you to see the Witch Museum, buy a pointy hat, and come in October.
Here’s what those guides don’t tell you. They don’t tell you that in October the Salem Witch Museum sells tickets online only, at 10 PM the night before, and that the good time slots are gone before you’ve brushed your teeth. They don’t tell you the House of the Seven Gables released its entire second half of October on September 19, or that the Peabody Essex Museum is closed every Tuesday and Wednesday, which catches a lot of people on a midweek trip. They don’t tell you that Salem has counted more than a million visitors every October for six consecutive years, 1.1 million in October 2025 alone, that 96,600 people were downtown on Halloween Day 2025, or that the city has just 44,000 residents.
And they definitely don’t tell you that Salem is two different towns. One is a month-long Halloween carnival on a handful of brick blocks. The other is a 400-year-old seaport with the real 1692 story, the richest merchant history in early America, and museums where, in March, nobody is in it. You can hear your tour guide.
That’s what this guide is for.
I lived in Massachusetts for seven years, less than an hour from Salem. It wasn’t a bucket-list trip for me. It was the place I went every October and every quiet February in between, as a giddy tourist and then as the local who knew which side street to duck down when Essex Street turned into a river of people. I watched the crowds get bigger every single fall. I also watched a lot of people drive in on a Saturday, circle for an hour, pay for three timed tickets, and see none of them properly.
This is the year-round version of everything I know about this town.

What’s Inside
✔ When To Visit & The Honest October Calendar – Salem month by month, then October 2026 week by week with the real crowd windows. Plus the foliage truth: the coast peaks later than the mountains, roughly October 14–24, so a mid-month weekday gets you the color and the costumes without the wall.
✔ Haunted Happenings 2026 & What Every Ticket Costs – every 2026 date that matters, from the Grand Parade on Thursday, October 1 to the Topsfield Fair (October 2–12), the Howl-o-ween Pet Parade (October 10), Witch Hats on the Wharf (October 17), and the Witches’ Ball on Halloween. A full admission table for the Witch Museum, the Gables, the Witch House, PEM, Ropes Mansion, Salem Maritime, Pioneer Village, and the Trolley, with the exact ticket release dates.
✔ Getting There, Parking, Weather & Halloween-Night Rules – the train, the ferry, the free satellite lots and shuttle with addresses, fall weather averages, a sunrise and sunset table, and the full Halloween-night timeline. Take the train. That’s the whole answer. There’s also an RV note, because you cannot bring a rig downtown.
✔ The Hocus Pocus Self-Guided Filming Tour – the six real locations with addresses, in walking order. Very little of the movie was filmed in Salem, and this is the part that was.
✔ The Shops Worth Your Money – 18 shops with addresses and hours. The witch shops run by actual practitioners, the bookstores, the makers, and the ones I take friends to. What’s left out is the Essex Street merch with a Salem sticker on it.
✔ Food, Drink, Cider & Beer – breakfast, lunch, and dinner by neighborhood, the cider, beer, and spirits rooms that let you breathe when downtown gets loud, and a cider donut run worth the drive.
✔ Where To Stay – splurge, mid-range, and budget hotels and inns, with October rate ranges and each property’s October rules. Plus a full Camping & RV page: Winter Island Park, Harold Parker, Salisbury Beach, Wompatuck, and The RV Truth.
✔ Beyond Salem: Day Trips Within An Hour – Marblehead, Gloucester and Rockport, Ipswich, Newburyport and Amesbury, Danvers, the Topsfield Fair, Lynn Woods, and Boston. This is where to go when Salem is full, and why some of these beat Salem on an October Saturday.
✔ Your Itineraries – One Perfect October Day, hour by hour. Two Days Any Season. Three Days With Dogs. And The Halloween Weekend Survival Plan, because October 31 is a Saturday this year.
✔ Salem With Your Dog – where your dog is welcome, where it isn’t, and where it can sleep. Written by someone who has done Salem with Loki, Freya, and Caly.
✔ Beyond The Witch Stuff: The Real History – 1692 without the costumes. Proctor’s Ledge, the execution site researchers only confirmed in 2016. The years when Salem was America’s richest port. And the 1914 fire that destroyed 1,376 buildings and left 18,000 people homeless.
✔ Which Tours Are Worth Your Time – seven tours compared side by side, with prices, plus what to know before you book a reading. Pick a storyteller over a recorded script.
✔ FAQs – driving, parking, the train, kids, costumes, the cemetery reservations, the fireworks that became a drone show, and whether you should come in October at all.
The Two Pages That Save Your Trip
Every other section in here is useful. Two of them are the reason the guide exists.
The October calendar splits the month into the weeks that are a sweet spot, the weeks that are peak, and the weekend that is a wall. Read it next to the event list and the problem jumps out. The Grand Parade opens the month on a Thursday. The Topsfield Fair pulls the North Shore inland through Columbus Day. The Ropes Mansion interior is weekends only and closes for the season in mid-October. And Halloween lands on a Saturday in Salem’s 400th year, which makes that last weekend the busiest three days the city has seen. A Tuesday in the third week and a Saturday on the 31st are the same streets and completely different trips.
The ticket and Halloween-night page is the other one. Pick one ticketed anchor per day. The Witch Museum is 10 PM the night before, online only. The Gables sells October in two batches, weeks out. The MBTA garage locks from 6 PM to 11:30 PM on Halloween, the drone show goes up over the North River at 10:10 PM, and the last train to Boston leaves at 11:05 PM. Miss one of those and your night ends on the wrong side of a barricade. Everything free on this list is better than everything paid, and the guide tells you which is which.
Hi, I’m Vanessa. I lived in Massachusetts for seven years, less than an hour from Salem, long before my husband Brian and I sold most of what we owned and moved full-time into our travel trailer, Betty, with our three dogs, Loki, Freya, and Caly. Salem is the town that taught me a place can be two things at once: a carnival and a cemetery, a tourist trap and a treasure. This guide is both of them, in the order I’d send a friend.
