The Dog-Friendly Acadia National Park Guide

Acadia is one of the most dog-friendly national parks in the country. Almost nobody tells you exactly how to use that.

Roughly 100 miles of trails and all 45 miles of the carriage roads are open to leashed dogs. But a few trails, including the Beehive, the Precipice, and the iron-rung routes, prohibit dogs entirely. The swimming beaches go dog-free from June 15 through September 8. And “dog-friendly” means something different on a sun-exposed granite summit than it does on a shaded carriage road.

This guide cuts through all of that.

10+ pages of everything you need to bring your dog to Acadia, written by a dog mom who spent six months on Mount Desert Island with three dogs: Loki (Husky mix), Freya (Husky), and Caly (our supermutt who was not prepared for Maine but adapted beautifully).

What’s Inside:

✔ Acadia Pet Policies & Rules – what’s allowed, what’s seasonal, what’s prohibited, and where the ranger stations are if you have questions

✔ What To Pack – the dog gear that actually matters for a national park trip, organized by trail day, boat tour, camping, and hot-weather visits

✔ Hazard Awareness – tick safety (including the Acadia-specific protocol we used all season), heat on granite, porcupines, and what to do if your dog meets a peregrine falcon situation on the wrong trail

✔ 13 Rated Dog-Friendly Hikes – each trail gets a full breakdown: distance, elevation, terrain notes, difficulty, and a Paw Score (our proprietary dog-specific rating system that factors in shade, surface type, water access, and how much your dog will actually enjoy it, not just whether dogs are technically allowed)

✔ Off-Leash Paradises – yes, there are places in and around Acadia where dogs can run. We found them.

✔ Dog Beach – the seasonal access windows, what the beach is like, and what to expect

✔ Dog-Friendly Eating Near the Park – the restaurants and lobster pounds with genuine dog-friendly outdoor seating

✔ Dog-Friendly Water Tours – yes, you can take your dog on the water. Here’s how.

✔ Where To Stay With Dogs – campgrounds (including Schoodic Woods with rare electric hookups), hotels, and two RV parks with standout dog amenities

This is for you if:

✅ You’re bringing a dog to Acadia and want more than a generic “pets welcome on leash” disclaimer

✅ You want trail ratings that account for your dog’s experience, not just whether dogs are technically permitted

✅ You want to know exactly where to let your dog off-leash and where to find a fenced run after a day on trails

✅ You want a realistic 3-day itinerary built around traveling with a dog

Hi, I’m Vanessa. Brian and I spent six months living near Acadia in 2025 with Loki, Freya, and Caly. We hiked hundreds of miles of dog-legal trails, found every fenced dog run within 20 minutes of the park, sat on every dog-welcoming restaurant patio we could find, and watched Loki try (and fail) to make friends with a harbor seal. Everything in this guide is from that season.

Hi! I'm Vanessa, a 30 something, sunset chasing traveler. I'm here to inspire you to travel wherever, whenever, and with whoever you can. My Huskies, Loki and Freya are usually along for the ride. I have a soul that likes to wander, a desire to experience the unknown, and a curiousity to discover things off the beaten path. I hope you'll stick around for awhile!

The free Bar Harbor/Acadia Cheat Sheet 🦞 It’s got The free Bar Harbor/Acadia Cheat Sheet 🦞

It’s got the places worth your time, the ones I’d skip, the sandbar you have to time with the tide, the trail almost nobody talks about, the bar hidden inside a gift shop, where to eat, and where your dogs are actually welcome.

Download it to your phone before you go, no cell service needed.

I didn’t just visit Bar Harbor. I lived there for six months, wandered the side streets, chased way too many sunrises, and learned the difference between the places everyone recommends and the ones you’ll still be talking about after you get home.

🦞 Grab the free cheat sheet at the link in my bio, or comment LOBSTER and I’ll send you the link.

The full Bar Harbor and Acadia guides are coming soon (next week-ish), but this is where I’d start.

Who’s got Bar Harbor on their road trip list? 👇
3 years of chasing sunsets from the road… …and the 3 years of chasing sunsets from the road…
…and they still ruin my schedule.

This Ruidoso sunset at Alto Lake did not disappoint. What made it even better? Wild horses showed up with a colt! See video in stories 😍

Every single time the sky starts showing off, I’m pulling over like it’s my first road trip.

Some things are worth being late for.
The photos don’t tell you the best thing about Whi The photos don’t tell you the best thing about White Sands

It’s not just the endless white dunes or the way they turn pink at sunset.

It’s that the sand stays cool enough for bare feet, and apparently, 3 very happy dogs.

As the sun dropped, the crowds thinned out, the light turned golden, and for a little while it felt like we’d wandered onto another planet.

We stayed until the rangers started making their “time to head home” rounds. I’d do it again tomorrow.

Would your dog be sprinting across the dunes…or refusing to get sand between their toes? 🐾👇
I spent 6 months living in Bar Harbor here’s what I spent 6 months living in Bar Harbor here’s what it taught me…

🦞⚓️ The best places rarely make the top-10 lists.

They’re the sandbar you have to catch at just the right tide. The trailhead hiding across from a random mailbox. The coffee that somehow tastes better when it’s just you, the lobster boats, and a harbor that’s still waking up.

This is the short version. 🦞 The free Bar Harbor Cheat Sheet (basically the whole town on one page) at the link in bio! Ridiculously detailed guides coming soon! 😉

What’s the place you loved so much you started gatekeeping it a little? 👇
The thing no photo gets right about Canyonlands: h The thing no photo gets right about Canyonlands: how small it makes you feel. A few million years of erosion will do that.

Stood at this edge and forgot every single thing on my to-do list.

Which Utah park wrecked you (in the best way): Canyonlands, Arches, Zion, Bryce, or one you had to yourself? 👇
