Bar Harbor is one of those coastal towns that is exactly what you imagine a coastal town in Maine to be. I’ve been to Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park many times in the 7 years that I called New England home. In 2019, I visited 4 times, so at this point, I’ve got some personal favorite shops and know the best places to eat and drink in town. So what are the 8 Shops You Can’t-Miss In Bar Harbor, Maine?
Keep in mind that many of these shops and restaurants are only open seasonally as Bar Harbor pretty much closes up shop at the end of tourist season. But there are a few that are open

Bar Harbor, Maine, is a picturesque coastal town with harbor views, beautiful BNBs, and all the lobster you can handle. There are so many charming shops downtown that you can find anything you are looking for. It’s a great place for dog owners. Some of the shops are even dog friendly, most leave water bowls outside their shops. I’ve even seen a pet tortuous in its own stroller walking the streets downtown.

We LOVE Bark Harbor. And by “we,” I mean Loki & Freya really love the treats from Bark Harbor. Their favorites are bacon, cheese, and pumpkin-flavored treats. You won’t only find treats here, though, Bar Harbor also offers an assortment of toys, care items, clothes, and collars/leashes. It’s the perfect shop to visit if you are a dog lover like me!
10. Cool As A Moose –

Spruce & Gussy is a truly charming shop offering a carefully curated selection of home and personal accessories with a major emphasis on goods produced by small US and fair trade companies. They value handmade items, so if you are looking for something unique, this is the place for you.

You won’t find anything else quite like In The Woods in Bar Harbor. This truly is such a cool shop! There are so many beautiful hand-carved wooden items here. Bonus: The wood is responsibly sourced. In fact, all of their products are made from dead wood removed from the sanctuaries in order to fertilize the land and help promote new growth. I haven’t bought anything yet, but I always love to browse. Some day soon, I’ll make a purchase.
7. Sherman’s Books & Stationary –

The oldest bookstores in coastal Maine belong to the Sherman’s, so it’s no wonder that this shop is special. I always end up stopping at Sherman’s on any trip to Bar Harbor. Not only is the bookstore amazing, but the other side of the stop is great as well. It’s

If you love handmade and eclectic, then A Little Mad is the shop for you! While this charmer isn’t on Main Street, it is one of my absolute favorites. This shop is filled with handmade whimsical items. They feature over 100 different artists and vendors. If you like to buy unique gifts for people (or yourself) when you travel, then you won’t want to miss this place.

You can’t go to Bar Harbor without visiting The Acadia Country Store. It’s got everything blueberry you can possibly think of! haha. Need a blueberry candy bar, or some blueberry soap, or perhaps a blueberry soda (100% recommend) they’ve got you covered! Don’t forget to try the homemade fudge, it’s so freakin’ good!

It’s no wonder these shops are back to back on the list, they are owned by the same group of owners. They’ve been locally owned and operated for the last 84 years and know what they are doing. This shop has a little something for everyone. The 1st floor features soaps, clothing, housewares, pottery, books, local food, and snacks. While the 2nd-floor features Maine-crafted gifts like rope mats, buoys (I bought one of these in 2019), art, photography, prints, cards, and kitchenware.

My Darling Maine isn’t just another touristy gift shop, here, you will find interesting keepsakes that were most likely made in Maine. What you’ll find in My Darling Maine are gifts with a purpose, many with a unique twist and a message from a local artist. You can tell that there is a lot of thought put into each item this boutique carries, and that’s what makes this one of my favorite shops in Bar Harbor.
2. Native Arts Gallery –

The Native Arts Gallery is a unique family-owned and operated store that has been bringing southwestern Native American jewelry to Bar Harbor for 20 years. I love this place! I stop every time I’m in Bar Harbor. I’ve bought earrings and a necklace here in the past and love them. They offer sterling silver jewelry in Navajo, Zuni, and Hopi designs and an assortment of handmade crafts. They are open from early May to mid-October.

Window Panes wasn’t a shop I was looking for, but I stumbled on to this shop when I stayed at the Ivy Manor Inn. They offer fun and functional items for your home. I bought a Gardenia perfume here (I collect perfumes from my travels) and a few small John Muir and National Park books. It’s also a great place to window shop and to get home decor inspiration.
Tips For Shopping In Acadia:
- Some of the shops in Bar Harbor are seasonal. So make sure to check the hours posted because they change seasonally
- Bar Harbor gets incredibly busy on weekends, particularly during the summer
- If you can visit during the week

Udder Heaven was close to my hotel on my last trip to Acadia/Bar Harbor. I actually went there for “dinner” the night that I arrived. Yep, ice cream for dinner! Why not? They have sundaes, crepes, pastries, milkshakes, sorbet, and of course, amazing ice cream. The service is friendly and quick, and the prices aren’t bad either.

Not only does Ben and Bills have excellent mango sorbet, but they also offer lobster ice cream. Yep, you read that right, lobster ice cream. And yes, everyone I’ve ever heard read the sign makes the same face that you made when you read LOBSTER ice cream. Haha, I haven’t tried it, but it definitely piqued my interest.

If you’ve read my Best Lobster Rolls In Maine, you know I absolutely love this place. This is by far my favorite lobster roll in Maine and the best one I’ve ever had (and I’ve had a lot of lobster rolls). It was explained to me that there was a recent study done that found that lobsters do actually feel pain. So, when they are stressed before they die, the meat will end up being chewy. Charlotte’s has figured out how to humanely turn their lobsters into lobster rolls, and you can tell a HUGE difference. You can get these rolls 2 ways; I highly suggest you try it with butter!
